RD Riccoboni: A Biography
RD Riccoboni (born Randy David Riccoboni in Fresno, California, 1960) is an innovative and internationally recognized American painter and best-selling author celebrated for his vibrant, colorful artwork that exudes a positive and life-affirming spirit. Influenced by his early years in the suburbs of New York City and now based in San Diego, California, Riccoboni is a self-taught artist who began his artistic journey at the young age of four.
Despite having no formal art education, Riccoboni credits the encouragement of his family and teachers for fueling his passion and drive. Before dedicating himself fully to his art, he gained experience in banking and human resources, skills he now utilizes to market his own work and mentor other artists in building sustainable careers.
Riccoboni's artistic style is often described as evocative of the Impressionists, characterized by bold colors derived from the original rainbow flag. These hues represent themes of sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony, and spirit, reflecting his commitment to community and a sense of place. His subject matter is diverse, encompassing California landscapes, cityscapes, portraiture, and historic architecture, often capturing the spirit and beauty of his surroundings. A significant turning point in Riccoboni's artistic journey occurred during the AIDS epidemic, which deeply affected him through the loss of close friends. Riccoboni's commitment to the LGBTQ+ community is evident in his art. One of his most notable works, "We Rise As We Lift Others," commemorates the legalization of gay marriage and the flying of a giant rainbow flag in San Diego. This powerful piece was displayed at the California State Capitol. In his portraits, the artist infuses figures with vibrant colors inspired by the pride flag to celebrate community and inspire optimism.
Beyond his paintings, Riccoboni is also a best-selling author, with publications including "The Big Picture: The Seven Step Guide For Creative Success In Business", "The Art Traveler Guide: A Portrait of Balboa Park," and his romantic science fiction graphic novel. "Knights of The Vermillion Rose" which is illustrated and written by him.
RD Riccoboni's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and is held in private and public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York, and the San Diego History Center. He founded the Beacon Artworks Gallery, and his studio is currently located in the historic Village Arts and Education Center, at Spanish Village in Balboa Park, where he welcomes visitors.
